playful at home family session
One of the top questions I get here as a family photographer in Northern Vermont is how I work with all the dark and gloomy days we have. Truth be told, the lighting that comes with a cloudy, grey day is my favorite to work with as it leads to some truly gorgeous photos. The trick is knowing how to work with it to produce beautiful pictures for you and your family. When it comes to making indoor family photos, I will always choose a cloudy day over direct sunlight.
We have months left of mostly indoor family photos here in Vermont (though I’m certainly not opposed to outdoor ones in any weather!) and this family session is the epitome of a relaxed, indoor real-life shoot. We ate snacks, siblings played and bickered, and everyone’s true personality was front and center. This house was really special to this family and they were eager to have photos taken in it to memorialize their time makign it what it is today. These are often my favorite types of family sessions because, at the heart of it, we are hanging out and getting to know each other. You’ll often find me making gentle requests to move into good lighting or asking a kid to show off a cool skill for me again so I can get it on camera. My goal in your family sessions is to always get the most natural interactions between all of you that I can.
That, of course, leads to photos that are of you and your family, how you really truly are in everyday life. No posing, no forced smiling for the camera, just you and your love together.
